A hood that runs is not the same as a hood that pulls. Nearly every "the fan works but the smoke stays" call comes down to the path the air takes after it leaves the blower: a baffle in backwards, a cap flap that has lost its spring, or a duct joint that has come apart in a soffit.
- Airflow at the baffles first and then at the duct, so a blockage is separated from a motor problem.
- The roof or wall cap. A flap that no longer opens shuts the whole system down, and on a windy day it can push the smoke back at you.
- Blower bearings and mounts — a rumble is normally the bearing, a rattle is normally the mount, and both are worse when the blower sits in an attic.
- Speed control and the switch behind the fascia when only one speed answers.
- Duct joints in the soffit or the attic run, for cooking smells that drift back into the room hours later.
